Summertime Preparations | Various Locations

In January, a lot of people tend to make resolutions about working out that last about 2 weeks and then go forgotten until the weather starts to warm up. I know I try to hit the gym all year long, but definitely kick it up a notch when I know I’ll be breaking out my sundresses and swimsuits. Whether you live in the gym year-round or like an extra boost here and there, here are some companies that can help you get (and keep!) your body ready for summer.

Workout Apparel:

Lft Hvy Price: $20 -30

If you prefer to workout in tees or razorback shirts, LftHvy has got you covered. I personally love the message, both of LftHvy and the larger umbrella of DYG: Defy Your Genetics, Define Your Greatness. I actually bought a shirt as a gift for my brother, who is a total gym rat, and he LOVES it and says it’s super soft and comfortable. The one drawback is that you should hang it up to dry, but I’d say it’s worth it.

D’iyanu Price: $18.99-49.99

D’iyanu is for those looking for something more African-inspired. Everything from the sweatband hair accessories to the sweat suits have some sort of (beautiful) African-inspired print on it. You can choose to go all out and wear a piece that is completely printed or opt for something more subtle with stripes of the print. It all moves well whether you’re in the weight room or in Zumba class.

Healthy Eats:

Fuel Better Foods Price: $10.00

I’m just going to be honest: I love to eat. So I’m always looking for healthy snack options. I was intrigued when I came across Fuel Better Foods and decided to give it a try. Fuel Better Foods sells cocojerky – jerky made from coconut meat. Now before you twist your face up, I would definitely encourage you to try it. The three flavors (Spicy Bacon, Korean BBQ, and Sweet Maple) are pretty good. I personally don’t like coconut, so this is not my snack of choice, but it could be yours! There are also a TON of health benefits, including lots of Vitamin B, antioxidants, electrolytes, and fiber.

Juice Me Too Price: $2.00-9.00

I’m always down for a good smoothie, and Juice Me Too has them. Maho Bay (made with spinach, mango, apple juice, pineapple, and banana) is delicious and refreshing and EVERYTHING I needed after a good workout. They also have fresh pressed juices, wheatgrass and ginger shots, and a whole food menu. I’d love to start my day with the Pineapple Pete juice every morning, but the way my bank account is set up right now, it looks like this will have to be an occasional treat for me for now.

Fitness Planning & Accountability:

GrpFit Price: $0.00-$70.00

GrpFit is basically Instagram for Black fitness. There are no filters, so you’re forced to deal with what’s right in front of you. I like GrpFit because it keeps me honest and accountable. You can also search for workouts based on whatever you’re looking for (weight lifting, calisthenics, abs, etc). I don’t think I have any friends on the app (to be honest, I haven’t really looked. I’m not sure I’m ready to be that transparent), but the co-founders are really involved in the app (they follow everyone, I think) and have been supportive of my fitness journey. It’s crazy how something as simple as a double tap on a picture can give you a little bit more motivation. And the great thing is that it doesn’t matter where you are on your fitness journey. You can find someone who is there with you or someone who has been where you are and has moved forward. I’m still getting used to being open with people, especially with my struggles, but this feels like a safe place to do it. GrpFit has also recently added a premium subscription for $9.99 a month or $69.99 for the year that allows you to access unlimited workout plans and sync to your Apple watch.

Fitness First Media Price: $34.49 Fitness First Media (or FitFlyFab, I’m not 100% sure of the current company name) has a FitPossible Fitness Planner and Journal. I love my life planner, so I was super excited to find this fitness journal to help me get it together. It actually has a place for everything you need: your goals, your motivation, your shopping list, your fitness plan, your water intake – literally everything. I’m still getting into the habit of writing it all down. I’m not there yet, but I’m working on it and I think that it’s a great tool to make it happen. Fitness First Media does not currently have an active website and has not had any recent activity on social media. I will make sure to let you know if anything changes.

I won’t say I love to work out, but I do love feeling good about my physical appearance, so I’ll continue to look for things that help me get to where I want to be.

Happy buying!
