8th and Roast | Nashville, TN

8 & r coffee

This coffee shop appeared on a list of Black-owned businesses I found while I was preparing for my trip to Nashville. I am not a big coffee drinker, so I did not get too excited about it—until I saw (and smelled) their coffee in the grocery store once I arrived. The scent was so overwhelmingly delicious that I had to make sure to visit.

Atmosphere:

8th & Roast has two Nashville locations—one in the Woodland area in the Waverly neighborhood and the other on Charlotte Avenue right on the edge of the Sylvan Park area. I visited the Charlotte Avenue location and instantly wished I had some work to do. The shop felt so inviting and was everything you want in a comfortable working environment: spacious and light with just a little bit of noise. With the smell of the most delicious coffee wafting in the air, the atmosphere just seemed perfect for a productive day of work or a quiet catch up with a friend.

Food and Beverages:

I am not a big coffee drinker (I do love the smell), but I enjoyed my Black Lavender Latte, which combined the house-made black tea and a lavender-infused syrup with espresso. I got mine with oat milk, and it was delicious. I also tried the Nitro Lemonade, which puts a spin on an Arnold Palmer, mixing house-made lemonade with the nitro brew. Again, I’m not a big coffee drinker, so I probably won’t have that again.

My brother, however, is a big coffee drinker and gave his stamp of approval. The French Connection he ordered had tasting notes of brown sugar, hazelnut, and cinnamon. It’s what piqued our interest in the grocery store and took him back to the coffee shop before the weekend was over.

Outside of our selections, 8th & Roast has the light and dark roasts and all the drip coffee and espresso drinks you would expect from a coffee shop. For non-coffee drinkers like myself, there are non-espresso drinks, like horchata and hot chocolate, and a few tea options. You can also pick up a bottled drink from the cooler.

As far as food is concerned, there are pastries, sandwiches for breakfast or lunch, and even a couple of salad options. I didn’t eat this time, but I am sure I will be back to try them out.

Outside of the two coffee shops, you can find 8th & Roast coffee in Nashville-area Kroger grocery stores. If you’re not near Nashville, you can order the coffee on their website. There’s even a subscription option, so you never run out.

Price:

The prices here seem in line with coffee shop pricing—coffee drinks start at $2.29 and can cost up to $5.75. Non-coffee drinks cost between $3 and $5. There are also daily happy hour specials for half off specific drinks. The bottled drinks run between $2.50 and $4.50.

Breakfast sandwiches cost an average of $6 and lunch sandwiches and salads are about $9. The pastries will run you about $3.75.

Service:

The baristas we encountered were all very friendly. They answered all the questions we had and worked quickly to get our drinks made. We got there about 30 minutes before their happy hour started, but they were gracious enough to give us the daily deal.

Overall:

I enjoyed my time at 8th & Roast, and I will definitely be back. I recommend you check them out too.

Happy buying!
